Dua Hal

Sang Murabbi: Mencari Spirit Yang Hilang

Tolstoy & Dostoyevsky

Tolstoy menulis dalam keadaan punya segala-galanya. Menulis untuk berkarya.

Dostoyevsky menulis dalam penuh kemelaratan. Menulis untuk hidup.

Untuk itu aku lebih menyanjungi Dostoyevsky.

Sonya Semyonovna pastilah lebih hebat berbanding Anna Arkadyevna Karenina.

Pelacur yang tak punya apa-apa, kecuali cinta.

Obor kekuatan dalam kemelaratan.

'bagaimana melukis kejahatan?
hanya dengan menjadi mangsanya -
dan kau bertahun ditambat
kepada bola besinya.'

The Killers - Battle Born

Up against the wall (Up against the wall)
There's something dying on the street
When they knock you down (Up against the wall)
You're gonna get back on your feet
Cause you can't stop now (Cause you can't stop now)

Did they break your heart? (Did they break your heart?)
And did they cause your soul to mourn
Remember what I said
Boy you was battle born
Cause you can't stop now (Cause you can't stop now)

White Nights (1957)

“If and when you fall in love, may you be happy with her. I don't need to wish her anything, for she'll be happy with you. May your sky always be clear, may your dear smile always be bright and happy, and may you be for ever blessed for that moment of bliss and happiness which you gave to another lonely and grateful heart. Isn't such a moment sufficient for the whole of one's life?”

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, White Nights

Picture: White Nights (Le Notti Bianche) (1957) Directed by acclaimed Italian director Luchino Visconti, and based on a story by Russian author Dostoyevsky

Isn't such a moment sufficient for the whole of one's life?

Buku September

Buku-buku September. Tidak banyak kali ini. Novel sastera klasik tetap menjadi pilihan. Dan juga buku kedua Kazu Ishiguro, selepas The Remains of the Day.

[Book Review] The Remains of the Day

Title: The Remains of the Day
Author: Kazuo Ishiguro
Read on: 3 September 2015

"After all, there's no turning back the clock now. One can't be forever dwelling on what might have been. One should realize one has as good as most, perhaps better, and be grateful."

Done reading this book from Kazuo Ishiguro. My first book of his. A very interesting story about a butler who embarked on a journey of self discovery. Though I kinda hate Steven for him being oblivious towards Miss K's feeling. But overall, it's a very good read.

The most important lesson would be as I quoted Miss K above, you can never change your past, no matter how hard you try. You can hide it. But you can never ever change it. So just embrace it as a lesson for you to face the coming days. Running away won't help much.

And to fight for something is itself a noble thing to do. Doesn't matter if you make it or not. Just like Doestoyevsky said, the discovery doesn't matter much. It is the act of discovering that really defines who you are.

4 out of 5.

the remains of the day

With just a few dollars left in my wallet, I spent my long weekend doing nothing but laying in bed, reading Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day. 2/3 finished. Just a little bit more. Quite interesting.

I seldom venture into new authors whom I know nothing about. It just happened that the Vintage Facebook page shared a quote from this book and I was amazed by the language used so I said to my self, "Why not?".

And with the extra hundred bucks I got from my friend (he asked me to check some documents), I bought that book from MPH Nu Sentral. Considering that my wallet is already at critical level, buying this kind of book is a huge gamble. Luckily it's not so bad. Enjoyable. Can't wait to finish it.
